An artist development program to help you level up your art practice.

Artist Commons is a year-long online program for emerging artists looking to get serious about their work. Artists accepted into the program are paired with a cohort and mentor who offer feedback and accountability to help you grow your art practice. Weekly lectures on craft, the art world, various modern and contemporary art movements, and the business of art will expand your toolkit and build momentum.

Generous feedback, rigorous craft.

Praise for the program director’s previous classes

“This class challenged me to take my art more seriously and gave me the discipline to be a more intentional and structured artist.”

— Lauren S.

“I loved the feedback and how detailed and tangible the advice always was.”

— David R.

“I didn’t expect the course to be this complete. Other classes I took this year felt superficial by comparison. It is the most I’ve ever learned in a short period of time.”

— Kyung-Shin J.

“I really loved this class and I got so much out of it. I think it really helped me grow in my confidence as a creative person, which was something I wasn’t even really aware that I needed to do.”

— Emma O.

  • Artist Commons is for working and emerging artists. If you are looking for feedback on your work, want guidance about how to navigate the art world and the business of art, and long for a generous and inspiring community, then Artist Commons is for you. Whether or not you went to art school, Artist Commons is designed to support artists at multiple stages in their career through actionable knowledge and personalized time with mentors.

  • All disciplines are welcome, from painting and sculpture to photography and digital art, and everything in between. The programming in Year 1 will look to the future with a special focus on tech-based art.

  • Cohorts are approximately 8–10 people. Each week of the quarter, cohorts meet with their mentor for an hour and forty-five minute session. Two students will present their work each session for feedback from their mentor and peers.

Cohorts are put together based on discipline, location, hours of availability, skill level, and goals. If you have friends in the program, you may request to be paired together in a cohort and our team will try to accommodate.

Aside from extraordinary extenuating circumstances, it will only be possible to switch cohorts at the end of each quarter.

  • Each member will get three opportunities for verbal feedback on their work during each ten-week quarter. These include two personalized feedback sessions with your cohort and one one-on-one crit session with your mentor.

There will also be community discussion spaces on the desktop site and in the customized smart phone app for sharing work and getting ongoing written feedback from the broader Artist Commons community.

  • Expect a minimum of 5–6 hours per week, typically split across three events: your weekly cohort feedback session (the only activity that’s mandatory) and a rotating array of lecture formats and discussion group activities. You’ll also receive a biweekly reading assignment, and should plan consistent studio time to make your art.

Lectures and artist presentations are recorded with transcripts for asynchronous viewing; cohort sessions and other small group discussions are live-only and not posted. The program runs January–December in four 10-week quarters with 1–2 week breaks between quarters so everyone can recharge and return with focus. See the full schedule for dates.

  • Artist Commons events operate on roughly a two-week rotation. In the first week, you might have a reading group discussion about an article on Sunday, a lecture on the business of art on Wednesday, and your cohort feedback session on Friday. Then the following week, you might have an art history lecture on Sunday, a craft workshop by a visiting artist on Wednesday, and your cohort’s feedback session again on Friday.

  • We accept domestic and international credit cards, ACH, employer purchase order, and documentation for employer reimbursement. We also accept one-time ETH and USDC payments for artists willing to pay for the entire year’s tuition upfront.

Tax/VAT is calculated by Stripe at the end of the payment process and appended to the total cost. The tax/VAT amount is based on your country/state and its laws regarding educational services.

  • Artist Commons offers multiple partial and full scholarships each year. If you want to support these artists and their long-term growth, please reach out to us about donating at giving@artistcommons.art.
